Why have an Independent Research class?
Students in G/T classes have many research and product demands. This class offers the time to teach secondary and primary research skills and advanced technology skills that the students will need for their middle school years. The skills taught in the Independent Research class will reinforce the skills taught in the G/T content area classes, as well as
provide the students with additional tools and strategies that will elevate their work.
What skills will students learn as part of the Independent Research class?
Students will learn how to conduct both primary and secondary research in an effort to address a particular topic and research question. As part of the secondary research process, students will learn how to select and define a topic, locate source material, record notes, and assemble a conclusion paper. While working through the primary research process, students will learn how to state a research question, state a hypothesis, determine the appropriate research design, collect data, analyze data, write a conclusion, and present their findings. Students will also learn advanced technology skills to assist them in the research process. These skills will include locating Internet sources, analyzing data in Excel, composing conclusions in Microsoft Word, and presenting findings in PowerPoint.
What are the primary research designs that students will learn as part of this class?
Students will learn and conduct brief research assignments using each of the following research designs:
• Descriptive
• Historical
• Experimental
• Correlational
How will students demonstrate their understanding of the primary and secondary research process?
At the beginning of this course, students will participate in mini-research activities that acquaint them with each aspect of the research process. After participating in the modeled activities, the students will conduct their own original research investigations. The culmination of their year’s research will be showcased at the Enrichment Fair.
Who should enroll in the GT Research Class?
G/T Research is an elective course. Sixth-grade students enrolled in G/T English and G/T Math may request the GT Research Class. This course work is not available after sixth grade. Those interested in additional independent research may request to conduct an independent research study. Contact Ms. Glass for more information.
When do students take the GT Research Class?
Students take the class every day for one semester during one of the related arts time slots.
